I would like to lead a Fossil Trip on Sunday, May 29th of the Memorial Day Weekend.  The trip would be to 2 collecting sites. Low Tide is 7:20 am and 7:20 pm.  This is a trip where everyone can go, families and even dogs on a leash.  You must pack your lunch and water, sunscreen, etc.  What you carry in, gets carried out.  You can find shark’s teeth-many different varieties-whale bone-vertebrae-plus sea shell impressions in hardened clay.

1st stop would be: George Washington’s Birthplace National Monument. 8-8:30am. Free No cost. You are not supposed to go into the water.  Not supposed to take anything you find, but the public does it all the time.  Equipment-baggies, spaghetti strainer-plastic, and something to scoop sand.

Directions to George Washington Birthplace National Monument:

From Fredericksburg/I-95:
Exit I-95 at Exit 130A and continue onto Route 3 East. Follow Route 3 East for 38 miles. Look for Route 204, which is on the left. After turning down Route 204, entrance to park is approximately 2 miles. Turn left at traffic circle for the river.
From Route 301:
Follow Route 3 East approximately 12 miles. Take the left at Route 204.After turning down Route 204, entrance to park is approximately 2 miles. Turn left at traffic circle for the river.

2nd stop would be: Westmoreland State Park9:00am until you want to leave.  Equipment-a few baggies for collecting, a good pair of sneakers to walk down 1 steep hill, spaghetti colander-plastic, and something to scoop sand with.  Bathing suit would be a good idea so you can go into the river.  We even carry folding chairs and blankets down to the river to relax in between the hunting.  I pack for the whole day.  This park even has an Olympic pool for a nominal fee and a snack bar.  Fee to get into the park is $4.00 per car. A park interpreter will talk to our group about the fossils in the area at 10:00 am.
There is an optional Kayak/Fossil trip event this day in the park.  A park interpreter will lead the trip.  You would leave the boat area at 9am.  The cost is $25.00/2 seat and $19.00 1 seat kayak.  You must make a reservation for this trip with the VA State Park : 1-800-933-7275.
