Official FOSSIL Collecting Trip Announcement
Calvert Cliffs State Park, Lusby, Maryland
Sunday, September 19th, 2010 10am until we sunburn.
Are you reading this?  Then you are invited.  Short Notice – My apologies.

WHEN: Sunday, September 19th, 2010 10am (meeting at the parking lot in the park).  At that point those of us with only legs will hoof it down the trail to the bay (1.5 miles) and those of us with boats will drive to Cove Point to then paddle back up to the point where the trail meets the bay.  That's right!  A boat based geological adventure!  (Weather permitting).
This is a great trip for kids of all ages, and not only goats, but people too.  The boat(s) can be used to ferry folks up or down the beach to reach areas not normally prospected.  Cool idea, huh?

WHERE: (from I66 and I495 in Virginia)
Take exit 64A to merge onto I-495 S toward Richmond             25.7 mi

WHY: Sharks Teeth!  Whale Bones!  Skates Plates!
“The park is known for the abundance of mainly Middle Miocene sub-epoch fossils, which can be found on the shoreline. It contains the type locality site of the Early to Middle Miocene Calvert Formation. These rocks are the sediment from a coastal ocean that covered the area during that time. The age of the formation is (19-)18-15(-14) million years ago (Ma), i.e. it extends essentially over the Hemingfordian stage.”
See: http://www.ecphora.net/mgs/gallery06.htm for some idea what you'll find.

ALSO:  Cave bits.  Small caves form in the limestone then fall out as they erode.  Some of these are large and make excellent display dishes, another reason for bringing a boat for transport.

WHO: Any and all members in good standing of any eastern federation affiliated club and guests.  Roanoke Club members also welcome (Special Dispensation).  All non-quadrupeds under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.  Non-human bipeds must be spayed, neutered or at least suave and sophisticated.
If you, finest of readers, are not a member you may go to our website, www.novamineralclub.org, print off the membership form, fill it out and show up at the trip meeting with that and the appropriate of membership dues.

WHAT: (stuff to bring)
Steel-toed Boots – NOT required, but a good idea.  Sneakers will work fine on this trip.
Safety Helmet - NOT a must, but a good idea.  Actually, we don't need these.
Safety Goggles - NOT needed, but a good idea.  See it coming and going.
Heavy Work Gloves - NOT a necessity, but a good idea.  Good for rasping the yuck off old shells.
Other Handy Objects - not explicitly solicited, but a good idea.  A small backpack to hold all your stuff, food and drink for your entire party (lets not be like the Donners.)  Plastic bags for all you find, sunscreen, bug spray, a first aid kit, beach chairs, surf boards, OK this is not a normal fossil/mineral site.  It's a beach.  Bring an old colander to sift through the pebbles for teeth.  Dental experience a plus.

LASTLY: Due to the vagaries of weather, international markets, the infant art of earthquake detection and my own fevered dreams, the event may be canceled for no particular reason.  If there is any question as to whether the trip will come off or if you simply want to go on the trip contact me at  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
